GREAT POND SHOOTOUT NTR EXCELLENCE SUR GLACE KIRKLAND 3 ON 3 RULES
1. NUMBER OF PLAYERS - Game is played with 3 skaters and 1 goalie per team on the ice at any one time, although the goalie can be pulled at any time for an extra skater.
2. NO CONTACT – all categories are no contact – no hitting is allowed.
3. THREE PERIODS RUNNING TIME - All regulation time games are three periods of 20 minutes running time each. There will be a 2 minute warm up at the beginning of each game and 1 minute between the periods. Ice is flooded at the end of every game. NO TIMEOUTS OR OVERTIME in the first round. One time out allowed in each playoff game.
4. FACEOFFS - Play stoppages are minimal. The emphasis is on continuous play. Faceoffs only after goals, penalty shots, an injury timeout called by the official, when the puck goes out of play, and at the start of a period. On all other whistles (eg. Goalie saves or freezes puck, offside), the official whistles the play dead, the defensive team gets possession of the puck in their zone and the offensive team clears the defenders' zone to the blue line and waits for the defending team to bring the puck out over their blue line.
5. PENALTIES – penalties give rise to a penalty shot. If there are coincidental minors given, each team gets a penalty shot, but the offending players are not permitted to take the shots – the shots must be taken by another player who was on the ice. Referees may expel any player for hitting from behind or other serious infractions. The organizing committee shall rule on any further suspensions it deems appropriate. All such decisions will be final.
6. OFFSIDES – the only calls made other than penalties and goals are offsides. On the initial offensive zone entry, the blue line determines offside. Once the puck crosses the blue line and enters the offensive zone, however, the centre red line becomes the "blue line". In other words, once there is entry of the puck over the blue line, the puck may move back and forth over the blue line, up to the red line, without there being an offside – the offensive zone becomes the area from the red line in. If the puck comes back out over the red line after the initial offensive zone entry, then attacking players must clear out to the blue line before the puck can be re-entered, at which time the blue line counts for offsides until the puck is re-entered over the blue line. If there is an offside call, puck possession goes over to the defending team while the attacking team clears out to the blue line.
7. NO ICING OR TWO LINE PASSES CALLED
8. FIRST ROUND TEAM STANDINGS – in the first round, there is no overtime. A win is two points for the winning team, while a tie is one point for each team. The top four teams in each category advance to the semi-finals. For purposes of tiebreaking by way of plus minus differential, a maximum goal differential of 8 will apply. The criteria for tiebreakers will be as follows:
- head to head (applicable when there are two teams tied) - most wins - fewest losses - plus-minus differential (maximum differential of 8 counted for any one game) - most goals scored for (actual goals scored for) - fewest goals scored against (actual goals scored against) - coin flip
9. PLAYOFFS – In the event of a tie after regulation time in a playoff game, there will be one overtime period of 5 minutes running time, and the team leading after that 5 minutes wins. In any playoff game, if after the first overtime period the score is still tied, there shall be an additional sudden death 5 minute overtime, with the first team scoring being the winner. If after this second overtime period, the score remains tied, there shall be a shootout. The shootout shall consist of each team selecting 3 shooters, and each team shall alternate (a coin toss determining who shoots first), until all six shooters have gone, at which time the team which scores more goals in the shootout wins. If the score still remains tied after that, each team shall send one shooter each in a sudden death format until the tie is broken after each team has sent a shooter. Each skater on the team must shoot before a shooter who has already gone can go another time.
10. NO PROTESTS – no protests will be allowed. All decisions of the organizing committee are final. Remember, this is meant to be fun.
